Microsoft PowerPoint includes an easy to use  audio and video recording facility. It is suitable for narrating a powerpoint presentation, we recommend 5 to 10 minutes per recording.

It is easy to learn and the controls will be familiar to PowerPoint users. You will need a presentation, a script or outline of what you want to say, headphones with  a microphone are recommended and a quiet place to make your recording.

Version information

The latest version of Powerpoint is recommended for this task.

Steps to making and publishing your recording

Versions of powerpoint will vary across platforms, you may find buttons in different places, but there are some common steps and points to consider for all steps.

We suggest you try recording a few slides and get acquainted with the steps before embarking on a longer recording.

Step 1  Open your presentation and check the slide transition settings and then check your recording settings and subtitles settings, the step by step guide will tell you how.

Step 2  Start to record and end your recording, note on a Mac the recording will start as soon as you click record, but you can stop it and rewind to give yourself time to prepare. Replay to check your slides and audio are aligned and if necessary you can re record a slide.

Step 3  You need to save and export your recording to create the video file. Go to File, Export and choose Video or MP4 as your format. Note, it may take a few minutes to create your video.

Step 4 Upload your video file direct  to your Moodle module  in seven quick steps, this system will deliver the video to suit the device e.g.  desktop, tablet, mobile phone.

Open your presentation and check you have the record slide show tab

To get access to the recording tab open an existing or new presentation in PowerPoint, click File then Options.

Choose Customise Ribbon in the menu on the left, then tick the box which says Recording and click OK.

You should now have a new tab in the Ribbon. You only need to do this once. The tab will remain in the Ribbon in the future until you switch it off.

Record a Slide Show

From the recording tab choose Record Slide Show, then Record from Beginning... or Record from Current Slide... This will put you in record mode.

To begin recording click the red circular Record button in the top left corner of the screen. The program will count down from 3 and begin recording audio. Any transitions, animations or annotations you make will be recorded too.

You can draw on the screen by clinging on the pen or highlighter icon at the bottom of the screen.

To pause the recording click the Pause button. Once you have finished recording, click the square Stop button. To let you know there is some audio recorded, a blue Play button will become active and a small speaker icon will appear in the bottom right of the slide.

To clear audio click the X button and choose Current Slide or All Slides. Caution: Deleting audio is irreversible.

To navigate between slides click the left and right arrows. Once you're finished recording press Escape or click the x in the top right corner of the screen.

 Save and Export
